Partners and our key members of staff


Geoffrey F Ireland (partner)
LLB (Hons)

Once Geoffrey obtained his Law Degree, he began to work at a local firm in 1975, qualifying in 1979. He became partner and remained there until 1993.

Subsequently Geoffrey became a partner of Grice and Ireland Solicitors. In 2000 Grice and Ireland merged with Nolan, Pickles and Smith, which following a restructuring became nga Solicitors.

Geoffrey is now one of the partners at nga Solicitors and leads the Family Department, but is still undertaking work in the Criminal Department. He is an Accredited Police Station Representative and Duty Solicitor. Geoffrey is also a member of the Criminal Law Solicitors Association.


Anthony J Allen (partner)

Anthony began working in the legal profession in 1982, initially training to be a Legal Executive.

Anthony qualified as a Solicitor in 1998, becoming a partner at Grice and Ireland in 1999.

Anthony is now a partner at nga Solicitors and leads the Personal Injury and Civil Litigation Departments.

Anthony is based at our new offices on Hammerton Street, Burnley, and is a member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL).


Stephen Brown (partner)

Stephen qualified in 1977 after completing his studies at Liverpool and Chester Law School.

Stephen was an Assistant Solicitor at Nolan, Pickles and Smith before becoming partner in 1980.

Stephen is now based at our Colne office and is the partner who leads our Conveyancing Department.

Stephen also undertakes Wills and Probate and Estate Planning, including Inheritance Tax.


John P Nuttall (partner)
BA(Hons)

John attended Swansea University studying for the Law degree.

John then went to the College of Law in York.

John completed his training contract with nga Solicitors and became partner in 2004.

John works in our criminal department based at Parker Lane, Burnley.

John is an Accredited Police Station Representative and Duty Solicitor.  He has also obtained a diploma in Prison Law and specialises in this area.


Jane Waller
LLB(Hons)

Jane obtained the Law Degree at Bournemouth University. She then attended the Chester School of Law to study the Legal Practice Course.

Jane began her training contract in 1995 and qualified in June 1997.

Jane started to work at nga Solicitors in 2004 after spending the previous years working for a local firm.

Jane has over 10 years experience in Family Law and practices in the Family Department. She has obtained membership of the Family Law Panel.


David J Poole
BA(Hons)

David graduated from the University of Manchester with a Degree in Economics in 1995. He then spent 8 years working in Sales and Marketing.

Whilst in employment David studied the Common Professional Examination and the Legal Practice Course at the University of Central Lancashire.

David began a training contract with nga Solicitors in 2003 and qualified in November 2005.

David works in the Personal Injury and Civil Litigation departments. David specialises in defending possession proceedings. He is also an Accredited Police Station Representative and Duty Solicitor.

Gillian Sharpe

Gillian studied A’Levels at Burnley College before going on to Blackburn College to undertake the Legal Executive Course.

Gillian completed the first 2 years on a day release basis whilst working for a local firm. Gillian then completed the next 2 years on a distance learning basis.

Gillian was admitted as a Fellow of the Institute for Legal Executives in 1993.

Gillian began to work for nga Solicitors (Nolan Grice) in 2002. She is based at our Colne office and works solely in Conveyancing.


Liz Bates
LLB(Hons)

Liz studied the Law Degree at Staffordshire University, graduating in 2006.

Liz then took a year out from her studies and initially began working for nga Solicitors as a Legal Secretary.

Liz started the Legal Practice Course in 2007 at the BPP Law School in Manchester on a part time basis; she completed the course in September 2009 and is due to graduate in May 2010

Whilst studying Liz continued to work at nga Solicitors and began working as a Paralegal in the family department in 2007.


Andrew Smith
LLB(Hons)

Andrew obtained the Law degree from Lancaster University, graduating in 2006.

Andrew began working at nga Solicitors in 2008 as a paralegal to gain some practical experience before undertaking the Legal Practice Course; he is studying at the BPP Law School in Leeds on a part time basis whilst continuing to work as a paralegal, predominately in the personal injury and civil litigation departments.
